Royal Decree Approved on the Selection of New Senators

The Cabinet, during its meeting on 23 April 2024, approved a draft royal decree, proposed by the Election Commission of Thailand, on the selection of new senators to replace the current batch senators, whose five-year term is due to expire on 10 May 2024.

The current Senate, comprising 250 members, was appointed by the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) on 11 May 2019. The senators will remain in office to perform duties until there are new senators.
The new batch of senators consists of 200 members, according to Section 107 of the 2017 Constitution of Thailand and the Organic Act on the Installation of Senators.

The Senate will be installed from a selection by and among persons having the appropriate knowledge, expertise, experience, profession, characteristics, or common interests, and who are working or have worked in various segments of society.

They will be selected from 20 social and professional groups, with 10 members from each group. The selection will be carried out in three levels: district, provincial, and national levels. Under the draft royal decree, applications for the candidacy of new senators will be accepted on 13 May.

The selection at the district level will be held on 9 June, provincial level on 16 June, and national level on 26 June. The results of the selection will be announced on 2 July.

The roles of senators are to consider constitutional amendment proposals, scrutinize laws that are passed by the House of Representatives, and endorse candidates to independent agencies.
