Cabinet Approves in Principle Digital Wallet Scheme

The Cabinet on 23 April 2024 approved in principle the digital wallet scheme, aimed at stimulating the economy, promoting the circulation of money in each locality, and easing the cost of living burden for the people.

Another objective is to develop the quality of life of the people who need help, such as vulnerable groups and farmers. The scheme will also provide people with greater employment opportunities and bring about digital innovations for economic and social benefits.

It offers 10,000 baht in digital currency for Thais above the age of 16 years, with a yearly income of less than 840,000 baht and bank deposits lower than 500,000 baht. The beneficiaries are expected to spend this amount via a digital wallet at local participating businesses in 878 districts.

The Government will spend 500 billion baht on the scheme. Out of this amount, 152.7 billion baht will come from the 2025 national expenditure, 172.3 billion baht from the operations of the project through government agencies, and 175 billion baht from the management of the 2024 national expenditure.

Eligible people and shops will be allowed to register in order to participate in the digital wallet scheme by the third quarter of 2024. Spending under the scheme will begin in the fourth quarter. The entire project must be completed by September 2026.

The Digital Wallet Policy Committee has formed two subcommittees to ensure that the scheme will be carried out with efficiency and transparency, in accordance with related laws.
