Capacity-Building in Disaster Management

19 March 2017 (Readers 129)

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Suan Dusit University to enhance capacity-building in disaster risk management for local administrative organizations.

Signing the MOU on 16 March 2017 were Mr. Chatchai Promlert, Director-General of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, and Associate Professor Dr. Sukhum Chaloeysup, Chairman of the Advisory Team of the President of Suan Dusit University.

Under the MOU, Suan Dusit University will provide training for personnel from local administrative organizations on various issues, such as safety measures, disaster prevention and mitigation, and preparedness and response.

Associate Professor Dr. Sukhum said that the training program would educate the staff of local administrative organizations nationwide on steps to be taken to ensure safety in case of emergency. It is an effort to upgrade Thailands disaster management to international standards.

Mr. Chatchai said that Thailand has experienced disasters more frequently, resulting in a great loss of life and property. The Local Administrative Organization is the first area-based agency to assist local people affected by disasters and to handle the situation.

For this reason, he said, the Government and the National Council for Peace and Order emphasized efforts to enhance the capacity of local organizations in disaster risk management. Cooperation with Suan Dusit University in disaster management training also includes basic knowledge in first-aid, rescue operations, and disaster relief and emergency assistance for disaster victims.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation will provide technical assistance for the training program, while Suan Dusit University is the organizer of this program. Mr. Chatchai added that the training would help upgrade safety standards for local communities in Thailand.
