Surin Buddhist Lent Candle Procession and Aiyara Elephant Parade

Date: 13-15 July 2011 Venue: In front of Surin City Hall and at Phraya Surin Pakdee Sri Narong Changwang Monument. The arrival of the seasonal monsoon rains marks the beginning of the Buddhist Lent, during which all Buddhist monks retreat to the temples. Known as "Khao Phansa", the Buddhist "rain retreat" is a time devoted to the study of Buddhist scriptures and the teachings of the Lord Buddha, and meditation. Buddhist monks remain within the temple grounds and do not venture out for a period of three months starting from the first day of the waning moon of the eighth lunar month (in July) to the fifteenth day of the waxing moon of the eleventh lunar month (in October).

UNESCO Names Bangkok as World Book Capital for 2013

Bangkok has been chosen as World Book Capital for the year 2013. The city was selected by a committee made up of representatives from the three main branches of the publishing world and UNESCO, which met at the organization's headquarters in Paris recently.

UNESCO recognizes Wat Pho in Bangkok with Memory of the World award

UNESCO Memory of the World award has been granted to Wat Pho or the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, in Bangkok. Like the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the award is given to documents that are officially recognized as being of “outstanding universal value”.

Swiss Visitor Wins TAT's Most Amazing Moment" Photography Campaign Award

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has announced the winner of “The Most Amazing Moment,” Mr Marco Steuri (Fribu) from Switzerland, for his submission entitled “From the North to the South of Thailand”. He will receive a $ 10,000 cash award and TAT certificate.

Chiang Mai to Host Grand International Floral Exhibition

The International Horticultural Exposition: Royal Flora Ratchaphruek 2011, which will involve botanists, exhibits and agricultural expertss from 30 countries, will be held at the Ratchaphruek Royal Park in Chiang Mai from 9 November 2011 to 15 February 2012.
