Classical Music Conservatory to Be Built in Honor of HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana

A conservatory of classical music will be built on Chao Phraya river bank in honor of HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana and will be named after her. Culture Minister Khunying Khaisri Sri-aroon said yesterday that her ministry received approval from the Cabinet on 25 December 2007 to begin work on the project as a tribute to the Princess, who was known for her passion for western classical music. Meanwhile, foreign dignitaries and leaders across the world have sent their condolences to His Majesty the King and the royal family to share their grief over the passing of the Princess.

US Sends Condolences on Passing of HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana

The United States yesterday extended condolence message on the passing of HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana, expressing deepest and sincerest sympathy to Thailand. A statement issued by the US embassy in Bangkok said the Government and people of the United States were deeply saddened to learn of her death. The Princess will be remembered for her valuable contribution to the charitable foundations under her royal patronage and her deep concern for the well being of those in need not only in Thailand, but around the world, the statement said.

Public Can Pay Respects to Late Princess in Grand Palace

The Bureau of the Royal Household has announced that members of the general public are welcome to pay respects to late HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana Krom Luang Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra at Sala Sahathai Samakhom in the Grand Palace from Thursday to next Wednesday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. After next Wednesday, they can do so by visiting the Dusit Maha Prasart Throne Hall from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Their Majesties the King and Queen, as well as members of the royal family attended a royal bathing rite for the late Princess at Piman Rattaya Throne Hall in the Grand Palace yesterday evening, while His Majesty the King granted a permission for a public bathing rite for the late Princess at Sala Sahathai Samakhom from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Princess' Death Halts Coalition Talks

Chart Thai and Puea Pandin parties today postponed their announcement on joining a coalition government led by People Power party after the death of HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana in the early morning. Chart Thai Party Nikhon Chamnong told reporters that the party will not be involved in any political activities today, including the party executives meeting. Puea Pandin spokesman Wachiramon Kunakasemthanawat said party leader Suvit Khunkitti ordered the cancellation of the press conference. So far, Ruam Jai Thai Chart Pattana and Pracharaj parties, which won two and one seats respectively, have already decided to join the coalition.

Thailand Mourns Death of HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana

HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana, the elder sister of revered King Bhumibol Adulyadej, has died after six months in hospital battling cancer. The palace said in a statement today that His Majesty the King declared a 100-day mourning period and the funeral of the 84-year-old Princess would be performed at Bangkok's Grand Palace. Hundreds of Thais wearing black rushed to Bangkok's Siriraj hospital after television and radio stations reported that the Princess had died before dawn.

HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana Dies after Long Illness

Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana, the elder sister of Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej, died today at the age of 84. Princess Galyani had been hospitalized at Siriraj Hopspital since June last yesr, after doctors found she had abdominal cancer. A statement from the Royal Household Bureau said although the doctors tried their utmost to treat her, her condition has been deteriorating gradually and she passed away at 2:54 a.m. The Princess was noted for her interest in the arts, especially theater and classical music. She spoke five languages, and loved to travel, documenting many of her journeys in books. The Princess also took up an intensive schedule of charity work. She was a patron of at least five health-related foundations.
