Pla Tapian Bai Lan

The art of making a fish mobile is well-known among rural Thais, particularly in the central plains, where even children can be quickly taught to plait coconut or banana leaves into imaginary decorations and various items of equipment for games. The favorite kind of fish used in the mobile is the carp, probably because of its rhombus-like shape. The typical raw material used in weaving the carp is palm leaves. The “wicker carp” is, therefore, generally known as the “carp from palm leaves” or Pla Tapian Bai Lan in Thai.
