HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana Dies after Long Illness

Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana, the elder sister of Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej, died today at the age of 84. Princess Galyani had been hospitalized at Siriraj Hopspital since June last yesr, after doctors found she had abdominal cancer. A statement from the Royal Household Bureau said although the doctors tried their utmost to treat her, her condition has been deteriorating gradually and she passed away at 2:54 a.m. The Princess was noted for her interest in the arts, especially theater and classical music. She spoke five languages, and loved to travel, documenting many of her journeys in books. The Princess also took up an intensive schedule of charity work. She was a patron of at least five health-related foundations.

HM the King's Recovery Is Happiest News of 2007

His Majesty the King's full recovery from illness provided the greatest moment of joy to most Thais during the past year, according to a Suan Dusit Poll survey on the best of 2007. Of 8,367 respondents, 71.12 per cent said they were most happy about the King's full recovery when asked what was their happiest moment during the past year. On October 13, His Majesty was admitted to Siriraj Hospital with weakness on his right side and pain in his right ribcage. When His Majesty left the hospital on November 7, the country rejoiced. For most Thais, according to the survey, nothing made them happier than the King's full recovery. The survey said 20.89 per cent were most happy about the holding of general elections this month, and that the country was on track to return to democracy. The rest said they were most happy about the existing peace in the country.

HM the King Will Be Conferred Honorary Doctorate Degree on Veterinary

Khon Kaen University, Thailand's main university in the Northeast, will confer an honorary doctorate degree on veterinary to His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej for His Majesty's contribution to animal treatments. His Majesty the King has contributed to veterinary through many projects, even those for stray and injured animals.

HM the King Grants Audience to Foreign Envoys

His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej granted an audience to foreign ambassadors in Thailand at Bangkok's Chitralada Villa yesterday on the auspicious occasion of His Majesty's 80th birthday anniversary on 5 December 2007. The revered monarch thanked the foreign top envoys and their countries for the goodwill and said that Thailand has always stressed on good relations and cooperation with all countries across the world.

Subway Fare Reduced for King’s Firework Show

Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) will reduce subway fares tonight to a flat rate of 15 baht to persuade people to see the fireworks show marking the celebration of His Majesty the King's 80th birthday anniversary. MRTA director Prapas Chongsangorn said the reduced fare will begin from 9 p.m. until midnight. The fireworks will be held at Benjakitti Park, located near Queen Sirikit Convention Center and Sukhumvit subway stations. The fireworks performances are expected to begin at 8.30 p.m.

HM the King Watches Russian Ballet Troupe

His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, together with Her Majesty Queen Sirikit and HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, watched a performance of a world renowned Mariinsky Ballet from Russia at the Thailand Cultural Center in Bangkok last night. The Mariinsky Theater Ballet troupe is performing in Bangkok from 6-8 December 2007 as a birthday present to His Majesty the King from Russian President Vladimir Putin on the auspicious occasion of His Majesty's 80th birthday anniversary. One of the three-part programs performed by the 90-member Russian cultural troupe included the world premiere of Alexey Miroshnichenko's choreography for "Love Story", set to His Majesty's composition, "Kinnaree Suite".

Bhutani Royal Delegation Visits Chulabhorn Research Institute

Lord Chamberlain of Bhutan's Bureau of the Royal Household led a Bhutani royal delegation for social affairs to visit the Chulabhorn Research Institute under the royal patronage of HRH Princess Chulabhorn in Bangkok yesterday. The group observed cancer treatment projects at the Institute's National Cyclotron and PET Center, which is under the Chulabhorn Cancer Center and is recognized as a most advance and highest efficient cancer treatment establishment in Southeast Asia. The center uses advance nuclear medicine to diagnose and treat cancer patients. The study visit was part of the Bhutani royal delegation's one-week trip to the Kingdom scheduled for 4-12 December 2007.

Government Organizes Gala Reception in Honor of HM the King

The government organized a gala reception at Government House this evening in honor of His Majesty the King on the auspicious occasion of His Majesty's 80th birthday anniversary on 5 December 2007. Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn chaired the grand event. Earlier, His Majesty the King received birthday greetings from HRH Duke of York, Prince Andrew, 30 heads of states, and two international organizations.

Another Exhibition Is Held in Honor of HM the King

The Thai government, through the Finance Ministry's Treasury Department, is organizing an exhibition in honor of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej on the auspicious occasion of His Majesty's 80th birthday anniversary at Bangkok's Queen Sirikit National Convention Center from 7-11 December 2007. Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont opened the exhibition, entitled "A Story of His Majesty the King Through Coins and Royal Regalia", today. His Majesty the King's biography, talents, and royal projects-- recognized across the world as an exceptional model of morality and sacrifice for national development and the Thai people's well-being--were exhibited in the five-day event.
