Elephant-back Ordination of the Kui People
The elephant-back ordination is an annual event in the calendar of the Kui people, an ethnic minority in Surin province (about 450 kilometers northeast of Bangkok). It is a local tradition worth being listed or preserved as Thai heritage. On Visakha Puja Day, an important Buddhist anniversary commemorating the birth, enlightenment, and passing of the Lord Buddha, which falls on May 28 this year, the Kui will hold their annual Buddhist ordination ceremony at Ta Klang Elephant Village.
