A Series of Events in Celebration of His Majesty the King’s 80th Birthday

For Thai people, a person’s 80th birthday is an important milestone of life, and a special celebration is usually arranged on this occasion. The year 2007 marks the 80th birthday anniversary of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Thai people have launched year-long celebrations to commemorate this auspicious occasion from January 1 to December 31, but the highlights of the celebrations will take place in the month of December.

BMA Organizes Grand Exhibition to honor HM the King

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) organizes a grand exhibition from 1-5 December 2007 in honor of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej on the auspicious occasion of His Majesty's 80th birthday anniversary. The exhibition is open to the public at Sanam Luang ceremonial ground, Ratchadamnoen Klang Avenue, and the Maha Jesda Bodin Pavilion. In this occasion, the BMA is also present Bangkok as a capital of charm, safety, learning, comfort, happiness, and sufficiency economy in accordance with His Majesty the King's philosophy.

Three Foreign Experts Win This Year's Prince Mahidol Award

The Prince Mahidol Award Foundation today announced winners of the Prince Mahidol Award 2007--all are foreign experts. The Prince Mahidol Award Foundation, chaired by HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, announced that Medical Professor Axel Ulrich from Germany, who discovered a new treatment for breast cancer, was named the winner of the honorable award in the field of medicine, while Professor Basil Stuart Hetzel, a scientist from Australia, and Dr. Sanduk Ruit, an eye surgeon from Nepal, were both chosen the winners in the field of public health. The three winners were selected by the Foundation among 69 outstanding medical practitioners and researchers from 35 countries. The winners of both fields will each receive an honorable certificate and a cash prize of 1.5 million baht. HM the King will confer the royal award to the three winners at a ceremony held at the Grand Palace in Bangkok on 30 January 2008.

Almost 300 Projects and Activities Carried Out in Celebration of His Majesty the King’s 80th Birthday

A total of 286 projects and activities have been carried out in celebration of the 80th birthday anniversary of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. They were selected and approved by the Committee on Projects and Activities for the Celebrations on the Auspicious Occasion of His Majesty the King’s 80th Birthday Anniversary 5th December 2007.

Female Inmates Will Present World's Longest Batik to HM the King

Female inmates in Thailand, one of them is an African, will present the world's longest batik, 299.99 meters, to His Majesty the King on the auspicious occation of His Majesty's 80th birthday anniversary on 5 December 2007. The 1,599 inmates will complete their 29-day batik work, in which they imprint His Majesty the King's royal activities and projects, by 3 December 2007. They also join prison officials in writing their best wishes for the beloved monarch. Before beginning the batik work, the inmates took oaths before the King's portrait, promising to do good deeds for society and to follow his advices when they are released from prisons.

HM the King Is Back to Work

His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej can now perform his royal activities after recovering from his illness. The revered monarch began his work yesterday, granting an audience to heads of delegation to the 9th Congress of the International Association of Supreme Administrative Jurisdictions (IASAJ) at Chitralada Villa. Bangkok hosts the 9th IASAJ Congress, which is scheduled to end today.

Fireworks on Display to Celebrate HM the King's Birthday

Thai government will organize a five-night firework festival in Bangkok and Rayong provinces to celebrate HM the King's 80th birthday anniversary. Minister to the Prime Minister's Office Khunying Dhipavadee Meksawan said the firework festival, titled "Kreukfa Kongpathapi Sadudi Maharacha," will be held from December 4-8. Magnificent displays will take place at the Royal Turf Club, Chao Phraya River's bank near Rama 9 Bridge, Royal Bangkok Sports Club on Henry Dunant Road, Mae Pim beachfront in Rayong province, and Bangkok's Benchakiti Park and Queen Sirikit National Convention Center respectively.

Famous Russian Ballet Troupe to Stage Birthday Performance for HM the King

A world famous ballet troupe will stage a special performance for His Majesty the King in December as an 80th birthday present from Russian President Vladimir Putin. The renowned ballet from the Mariinsky Theater in Russia will perform at the Thailand Cultural Center on December 6-8. The Russian troupe impressed Her Majesty the Queen during her state visit to Russia in July to commemorate 110 years of ties between Thailand and Russia, and she relayed her impressions of the ballet in her birthday speech to well-wishers on August 12. The Mariinsky ballet was set up in 1783 in Saint Petersburg and has produced several world class performers, including Uliana Lopatkina.

His Majesty the King Honored with International Awards for His Inventions

His Majesty the King has been honored with awards from two international organizations, one from Hungary’s International Federation of Inventors’ Association, or IFIA, and the other from the Republic of Korea’s Korea Invention Promotion Association, or KIPA.

HM the King Given Awards for Inventions

Two foreign research agencies have bestowed prestigious awards on His Majesty the King for his outstanding inventions. The Budapest-based International Federation of Inventors' Association (IFIA) has presented the IFIA Cup 2007 for His Majesty's Chai Pattana areator. The Federation has also presented its Genius Medal prize to honor His Majesty's Self-Sufficiency Philosophy and his New Theory, which revives farming techniques based on Thai wisdom focusing on minimal use of resources but aiming for higher agricultural productivity. Meanwhile, the Korea Institute of Public Administration has presented a special prize to His Majesty for his contributions to Thai society. It said His Majesty's inventions had been proven practical and useful.
