Bangkok remains calm during Songkran as Government continues to work towards resolving political situation. Despite the current anti-government rally being staged by the United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) "Red Shirt" movement in the areas around Ratchaprasong Intersection in Bangkok, popular tourist destinations outside of Bangkok have not at all been affected.

Political Developments in Thailand: Fact Sheet as of 12 April 2010

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva reaffirmed that the Government is duty bound to resolve the present situation. He emphasised that the government’s aim is to restore normalcy and ensure the sanctity of the law, and all actions that will be taken will be in accordance with the law and international standards. There is no intention of using the law to suppress or harm those who are innocent. The use of the Emergency Decree is intended to enable the Government to restore normalcy in the various areas in Bangkok.

The Thai Cabinet on 7 April 2010 has declared a state of emergency. The government stressed that measures resulting from the declaration of the state of emergency in Bangkok and nearby provinces will not affect ordinary people or foreign visitors.

Declaration of a Severe Emergency Situation in the Areas of Bangkok; Nonthaburi Province; Mueang, Bang Phli, Phra Pradaeng, Phra Samut Chedi, Bang Bo and Bang Sao Thong Districts, Samut Prakan Province; Thanyaburi, Lat Lum Kaeo, Sam Kok, Lam Luk Ka and Khlong Luang Districts, Pathum Thani Province; Phutthamonthon District, Nakhon Pathom Province; and Wang Noi, Bang Pa-in, Bang Sai and Lat Bua Luang Districts, Ayutthaya Province.
