On the back of the announcement of the annual Top World Best Destinations by Conde Nast Travelers in which
Thailand placed 4th (up from 19th last year) and Phuket came in 10th on Conde Nast’s World’s Top Island Destinations, *P3 Update Magazine*, has once again designated Thailand as a *“Top Notch International Location”* for 2011 as well as, a *“Sought After Asian Location”* for production and location shoots.
Conde Nast reader’s also ranked Phuket high for value for money and for people/hospitality.
According to statistics of the Department of Tourism, Thailand Film Office, from a total of 578 productions in 2010 (a five year high), this year, Thailand is slated to fall a little short from last year’s high in productions. However, 453 foreign productions had been shot through August this year while only 377 were completed by this same time in 2010.
Total production value through 2010 was approximately US$ 62.3 million. The country has generated more than half that through the third quarter - approximately US$ 38 million. It is interesting to note (and for planning purposes) January and June 2011 were the busiest months for foreign productions filming in Thailand.
Through the end of August 2011, Japanese productions topped the list filming in Thailand (86 productions), with Europe a close second (80) and India coming in third (76).
Increasingly, production companies are coming to Thailand not just because of its locations, but to utilize Thai-based production services such as set construction, costume and make-up crafts, and post production work including sound and digital services.
