Smart Digital Hub to Be Established in the Eastern Economic Corridor

The Thai government is pleased with Alibaba Groups planned investment in establishing a smart digital hub in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) in Thailand.
The Founder and Executive Chairman of Alibaba Group, Mr. Jack Ma, paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha on 19 April 2018, when they discussed efforts to develop Thailand as an e-commerce center in this region.
The Prime Minister cited the digital economy as a major driver for Thailands economic growth. The Government has a policy to adopt information and communication technology in mobilizing national reform. E-commerce would play a key role in moving Thailand toward the digital economy.
He stated that cooperation between Alibaba Group and Thailand would provide great opportunities for economic development in accordance with Thailand 4.0, which is a value-based, innovative, and technology-driven economy. In addition, the EEC program will be linked with Chinas "One Belt, One Road initiative, which is also in line with Thailands trade and connectivity policies.
The EEC comprises three provinces, namely Chon Buri, Rayong, and Chachoengsao, where "smart cities will be developed for special economic development and investment in target industries.
The Prime Minister and the Executive Chairman of Alibaba Group also shared the view on promoting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to enable them to operate businesses through e-commerce. Startups should also be given a boost in moving toward the digital era. The Prime Minister encouraged Alibaba Group to share its experience and expertise in helping develop SMEs and startups in Thailand.
The Executive Chairman of Alibaba Group thanked the Thai government for its trust and cooperation in co-investing with Alibaba Group. He said that Thailand is regarded as a leader in the development of digital economy and that Alibaba Group is ready to work hand in hand with Thailand toward this aim.
On this occasion, Alibaba Group signed four memorandums of understanding (MOUs) with Thai agencies in the setting up of a smart digital hub, personnel development in the fields of digital business and e-commerce, skill development in digital business and e-commerce for Thai SMEs and startups, and developing Thailand Tourism Platform.
