Thailand provides humanitarian support to Cyclone Mocha-hit Myanmar

On May 22, 2023, Thailand showcased its commitment to providing humanitarian assistance to Myanmar, which was severely affected by Cyclone Mocha. The assistance was offered by the Thai Government through Ambassador H.E. U Chit Swe during a gathering held at the Purple Room in the Thai Khu Fah Building, Government House.

Expressions of sincere condolences and moral support were conveyed by the Thai Government and people to the victims affected by Cyclone Mocha in Myanmar. In response to an official request made by Myanmar, Thailand, as a neighboring country, has willingly offered humanitarian assistance. Moreover, the Thai Government has pledged to dispatch personnel and coordinate with the AHA Center, the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on disaster management, to provide additional support if required by Myanmar.

The Myanmar Ambassador to Thailand expressed gratitude towards the Thai Government, as well as the Thai public and private sectors, for their unwavering support to Myanmar. While Cyclone Mocha caused significant damage to 18 cities and resulted in numerous casualties, the impact was less severe compared to the devastation caused by Cyclone Nargis in 2008. The Myanmar Government's disaster management and rehabilitation efforts have shown improvement and have facilitated prompt relief and restoration in the affected cities through military and local administration initiatives.

The handover ceremony for the humanitarian assistance goods occurred on 23 May, at the Yangon International Airport in Myanmar. Additionally, the Thai Red Cross Society, along with the Thai Chamber of Commerce and Board of Trade of Thailand, has established dedicated bank accounts to receive public donations for the Cyclone Mocha-affected people in Myanmar. The accounts will remain open until May 31, 2023:

1.) The Thai Red Cross Society: SCB current account: 045-3-04637-0
2.) Thai Chamber of Commerce: KBANK savings account: 004-2-39457-2

During a cabinet meeting on May 16, 2023, the Thai Government provided preliminary approval for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other relevant agencies to assess and determine appropriate immediate humanitarian assistance measures for Myanmar in the aftermath of Cyclone Mocha.
