Chiang Khan in the northeastern Thai province of Loei has become the first ASEAN location to get the prestigious Green Destinations Award in the Silver category at ITB Berlin 2024.
Since 2019, Chiang Khan has been working hard to become a model destination for sustainable tourism, with assistance and cooperation from over 30 governmental and private sector organizations, as well as local communities. The Green sites Standard, based on the Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria (GSTC), requires member sites to member sites to meet 84 criteria.
Chiang Khan successfully achieved the 30 minimum standards in the preliminary assessment and evaluation, earning a spot on the Green Destinations TOP 100 Stories list for 2020.This year's silver Green Destinations Award indicates that Chiang Khan has fulfilled extra compliance levels in the thorough certification procedure.
There are 122 green destinations around the world.
In addition to becoming the first in ASEAN, Chiang Khan is the fifth destination in three Asian countries - Japan, Taiwan, and Thailand - to receive the coveted Green Destinations Awards.
Other Thai locations that promote sustainability will also participate in the Green locations Certification Programs for Destinations. These include Mueang Kao Sukhothai in Sukhothai, Nan Old City in Nan, Ko Mak in Trat, and Khlong Thom in Krabi.
