Thailand’s “Wat Arun” and “Yi Peng Festival” Recognized as “World Night View Heritage” Sites

Wat Arun, or the Temple of Dawn, in Bangkok and the Yi Peng lantern festival in Chiang Mai have been acknowledged as "World Night View Heritage" sites.

At the World Heritage of Night View Certification Ceremony, the certificates were given to the Wat Arun and Chiang Mai Province representatives. The event was held in conjunction with the "Japan Night View Tourism Summit 2024" in Bangkok.

Wat Arun, on the Chao Phraya riverside, is an internationally recognized landmark with a porcelain-adorned main pagoda. It is also an icon of the Thai tourism industry, having been featured on the logo of the Tourism Authority of Thailand.

Yi Peng, an ancient Lanna cultural tradition, is incorporated into the annual Loy Krathong Festival in Chiang Mai. The festival involves colorful lanterns being hung outside homes and temples, and sky lanterns, or khom loy, are released.

The designation of World Night View Heritage honors locations and activities worldwide that provide breathtaking nocturnal vistas and encourage travel.
