Paetongtarn Shinawatra voted to be Thailand’s next Prime Minister

Paetongtarn Shinawatra, from the Pheu Thai Party, has received the majority of votes from the Parliament today (16 August 2024), with the support of 319 representatives, 145 votes against, and 27 abstentions. Paetongtarn will become the 31st, the second female, and the youngest prime minister of Thailand.

The 37-year-old PM-to-be is the youngest daughter of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Paetongtarn graduated with a degree in Political Science with a major in Sociology and Anthropology from Chulalongkorn University, before pursuing a Master’s degree in International Hotel Management at Surrey University in the United Kingdom.

During the previous government, she served as the Chair of the National Soft Power Committee and the Deputy Chair of the National Health System Development Committee.
