The Maha Songkran World Water Festival is around the corner. It is the most eagerly awaited time of the year, when tourists, both Thais and foreigners, celebrate this Thai New Year event with grand processions, cultural performances, and epic water splashing nationwide. Everyone also anticipates a surge in travelers on flights during the upcoming festival. To ensure fast screening and the utmost safety of passengers, Airports of Thailand (AOT) reiterates some passenger guidelines related to the Songkran Festival.
- Water guns (toy versions) are strongly recommended to keep them in checked baggage for safety reasons and fast inspection at screening points. Any object that looks like a gun is prohibited on board.
- Scented water, also known as nam ob thai, or traditional Thai perfume used during Songkran, can be brought on board (carry-on), and it must be contained in bottles not over 100 milliliters in size. Its measurement should be clearly shown. The overall quantity of liquids may not exceed one liter.
- Spare batteries or power banks must be brought on board in your carry-on baggage only and are forbidden for carriage in your checked baggage.
The grand event will be held from 11 to 15 April 2025 on Ratchadamnoen Road and at Sanam Luang in Bangkok to mark Songkran as a “UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.” But if you miss this one, don’t worry, the festivities will continue all month long in other destinations around the country.
