The White House website has announced an executive order on the reimposition of the tariffs signed by US President Donald Trump on 31 July 2025. The US sets a new reciprocal tariff rate of 19% on Thai goods, down from the previous 36%, and it will take effect on 1 August 2025.
The Thai Government spokesperson Jirayu Huangsab stated that the successful negotiations with the US mark a significant step in securing more favorable trade terms. It brings Thailand’s tariff level closer to that of other neighboring countries such as Malaysia, Cambodia, Indonesia, and the Philippines.
“The Thai government's closing of this deal, with import tariffs at 19%, is another significant achievement for Team Thailand, a win-win strategy to maintain the country's export and long-term economic stability. It also emphasizes Thailand's potential in the global trade arena amid changes in international trade policy.” Jirayu said.
Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira posted a message stating that the announcement of the 19% tariff rate reflects the close friendship and alliance between Thailand and the United States, helping Thailand remain competitive on the global stage, building investor confidence, and opening the door to economic expansion, income, and new opportunities for Thailand.
However, the government recognizes the impact on entrepreneurs and farmers. Therefore, it has prepared comprehensive support measures, including the budget, soft loans, subsidies, tax measures, and necessary regulatory reforms. The outcome of these negotiations signals the need for Thailand to accelerate its adaptation, move forward to build a stable, strong economy, and be ready to face future global challenges.
