Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce has launched an “advanced rice yield forecasting system” that utilizes satellite technology and artificial intelligence (AI) to predict in-season rice production, enabling provincial commerce to efficiently plan and manage the rice harvest expected to enter the market at the end of the year.
The system can be categorized down to the provincial, district, and rice variety levels, and link it with real-time price data in the area. This information is used to prepare measures, such as accelerating the export of rice to international markets, in order to maintain price stability and ensure that farmers’ income is as stable as possible.
The ministry also plans to further develop and expand the system to other economic crops, including maize, tapioca, and sugarcane, to upgrade the management of Thai agricultural products and sustain their competitiveness in the global market.
