Thailand Targets Japan's Premium Market with GI Products

Thailand’s Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) has joined hands with the Japan Patent Office (JPO) and Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (MAFF) to strengthen intellectual property protection across patents, product designs, and trademarks. The collaboration also promotes the protection of Thai Geographical Indication (GI) products and expands their presence in the Japanese market, enhancing the global competitiveness of Thai entrepreneurs.

Currently, three Thai GI products have been registered in Japan: Doi Tung Coffee and Doi Chaang coffee from Chiang Rai Province, and Huai Mun pineapple from Uttaradit Province. Four additional products are in the registration process. The DIP aims to position Thai GI products in the premium market segments through proactive sales and marketing strategies. These efforts include opening sales spaces for Thai GI products in Japan and for Japanese GI products in Thailand, as well as organizing promotional campaigns to increase awareness of high-value Thai agricultural products among Japanese consumers and in global markets.
