Thailand Works with Iran, Oman to Secure Safe Passage for Oil Tanker in Hormuz

Thailand has successfully secured safe passage for its oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz following diplomatic coordination with regional partners, helping ease concerns over potential energy supply disruptions amid the ongoing tensions in the Middle East.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Thailand has engaged in direct diplomatic communication to clarify that Thai vessels are not involved in the conflict and requested safe navigation through the strategic waterway. Iranian authorities subsequently acknowledged the request and asked for details of the vessels transiting the area.

Two Thai vessels, including a crude oil tanker operated by Bangchak Corporation and another vessel linked to SCG Chemicals, have now safely passed through the Strait of Hormuz and are currently en route across the Indian Ocean. The shipment is expected to arrive in Thailand in early April.

The development is seen as an effort to help reinforce Thailand’s energy security at a time when global markets remain sensitive to supply risks linked to the Middle East situation.

Meanwhile, efforts are being made regarding the Thai cargo vessel Mayuree Naree, which had earlier raised concerns. Iranian and Omani authorities have reportedly coordinated to reach the vessel and its crew members. Confirmation of the crew’s condition is still pending.

In a public communication, the Iranian Embassy in Bangkok highlighted the longstanding relations between Thailand and Iran and reaffirmed the importance of bilateral friendship and cooperation.

Thailand and Iran share historical ties dating back more than 400 years, with relations spanning trade, cultural exchange, and diplomatic engagement. Observers note that this longstanding and cordial relationship continues to provide a constructive foundation for dialogue during challenging circumstances.

These latest developments also reflect Thailand’s effective use of diplomacy to safeguard national interests, particularly in ensuring uninterrupted energy supplies and the safety of Thai maritime operations abroad.
