The Tai Lue cultural tourism community in Muang Mang–Muang Yuan, located in Yuan Subdistrict, Chiang Kham District, Phayao Province, has been selected as one of Thailand's top 10 Model Communities for Cultural Tourism 2025 under the Ministry of Culture's "UNSEEN THAI THAI" campaign. Home to the Tai Lue ethnic group, whose ancestors migrated from Xishuangbanna in Yunnan, China, the community has preserved its language, beliefs, arts, and way of life across generations.
Often described as a "living museum," the community offers visitors an immersive cultural learning experience. Key sites include the Tai Lue History Hall, Wat Phra That Sop Waen, Wat Saen Mueang Ma — known for its traditional murals — and the Tai Lue Cultural Center at Wat Yuan. These places collectively tell the story of the Tai Lue people from past to present.
The area is also known for its rich tangible cultural heritage. Highlights include traditional wooden houses such as "Huen Tai Lue Mae Saengda," showcasing indigenous architecture, as well as performing arts like Fon Choeng, sword dance, and traditional Tai Lue singing. Local weaving is another key feature, with intricate patterns such as "Phak Waen" and "Nam Lai," created using traditional tapestry weaving and continuous supplementary weft techniques, woven into both fabric and contemporary products.
Local cuisine reflects a blend of Tai Lue, Tai Yuan, and Chinese influences. Signature dishes include "Aeng Tae," "Jin Som Prik," "Khao Ram Fuen," and "Khanom Pad Lue," all of which maintain authentic flavors passed down through generations. Spiritual traditions remain central to community life, with important ceremonies such as "Tan Tham," "Tan Tung," and "Tan Kuay Salak" continuing to be practiced, highlighting the deep connection between people, religion, and belief systems.
Tourism routes in the area are linked to nearby cultural landmarks, including Wat Nantaram, Wat Phra Nang Din, and Wat Boon Nak, offering visitors a broader understanding of Lanna heritage. This recognition reflects the community's successful integration of cultural capital, local wisdom, and traditional lifestyles into sustainable and creative tourism development.
