Thailand’s iconic Songkran, traditional Thai New Year festival, has drawn widespread international recognition, reinforcing its status as UNESCO-listed cultural heritage and one of the world’s most vibrant celebrations.
Government Spokesperson Rachada Dhnadirek pointed out that this year’s Songkran festivities were celebrated on an unprecedented scale, reflecting the strength of Thailand’s cultural identity and its growing global appeal. Inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, Songkran continues to connect people worldwide through its unique blend of tradition, culture, and joyful celebration.
This year, 42 foreign embassies in Thailand participated in promoting the festival by producing creative content that showcases Thai culture from diverse and contemporary perspectives. Leading international media outlets—including Associated Press, Reuters, Euronews, and Xinhua—have extensively covered Songkran, describing it as one of the most dynamic and lively festivals in the world. Meanwhile, Newswire, a press release distributor in North America, has praised Songkran as a “World Water Festival,” underscoring its growing global significance and its role in driving Thailand’s tourism and economic growth.
International coverage has also highlighted Thailand’s strong safety rules during the celebration. The Straits Times reported that Thailand had imposed “10 security measures” for water play during its Songkran festival, reflecting the country’s commitment to maintaining international standards in event management.
According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the Songkran holiday period from 11 to 15 April 2026 is expected to generate over 30.35 billion baht in tourism revenue. The number of international visitors is projected to reach approximately 500,000, generating around 8.1 billion baht—an increase of 6 percent compared to the same period last year.
The Government Spokesperson reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to promoting Thailand’s cultural heritage and wisdom, while leveraging Songkran as a powerful mechanism to create economic and social opportunities. Emphasis is placed on distributing tourism benefits across all regions of the country and enhancing Thailand’s competitiveness on the global stage.
