Thailand's King of Fruits Is Going Big in China: 1,500 Containers, 6,000 Stores

A high-powered delegation of Chinese importers, media representatives, and top influencers recently touched down in Chanthaburi province — the heart of Thailand's durian country — for a firsthand look at what makes Thai durian the gold standard in the world's most competitive fruit market.

Led by Dr. Nopparat Buahom, Agricultural Consul at the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Guangzhou, the group included executives from Pagoda — one of China's largest fruit retail giants, with over 6,000 outlets nationwide. Together, they toured lush orchards and state-of-the-art packing facilities, witnessing every step of the journey from tree to export.

This wasn't just a sightseeing trip. Department of Agriculture officials walked the delegation through Thailand's rigorous quality control process, from Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) certification and starch level testing to pesticide and heavy metal checks, plus strict pest control protocols. The message was clear: Thai durian isn't just delicious. It's safe, traceable, and held to the highest international standards.

Of course, no durian trip would be complete without a tasting. The delegation sampled multiple premium varieties, experiencing the quality they'll be championing back home.

The numbers speak for themselves. Pagoda already imports Thai fruit worth over 10 billion baht (approximately US$311 million USD) annually. And in 2026, they're planning to bring in about 1,500 containers of Thai durian alone, with ambitions to expand into additional Thai products.

Content and coverage from the visit are now spreading across Chinese digital platforms, building consumer confidence and fueling demand in Thailand's single largest fruit export market.

The relationship between Thai growers and Chinese consumers has never been stronger. And this is just the beginning.
