Thailand is reviewing its 60-day visa-free policy for visitors from 93 countries and territories, as authorities seek to address security concerns and misuse of the extended stay provision.
Minister of Tourism and Sports Surasak Phancharoenworakul said that most genuine tourists stay within 30 days, while only a small number make use of the full 60-day allowance. The government believes that extended stays may create loopholes for illegal employment, nominee businesses (foreign-owned businesses disguised under Thai names), and other activities unrelated to tourism.
The government is now considering reducing the permitted stay period to better align with actual travel patterns, while maintaining Thailand's competitiveness as a leading tourism destination. Relevant agencies are expected to submit proposals for further consideration.
The review aims to balance travel convenience with stronger security measures and a sustainable, high-value approach to tourism that delivers lasting economic benefits.
