Thailand Reaffirms Commitment to UN-Centered International System and Sustainable Peace at UNSC Debate

Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sihasak Phuangketkeow recently attended the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) open debate on “Upholding the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter and Strengthening the UN-Centered International System” under the agenda item “Maintenance of International Peace and Security” at United Nations Headquarters in New York. The meeting was chaired by H.E. Mr. Wang Yi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), during China’s presidency of the Council for May 2026.

During the debate, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs delivered a statement highlighting the importance of preserving the UN-centered international system in order to uphold the rules, norms, and principles jointly accepted by the Member States. He noted that the United Nations has remained the cornerstone of international relations for more than 80 years since its inception.

Thailand also reaffirmed its readiness to work with the international community to strengthen the UN-centered international system through three key approaches: promoting collective responsibility, supporting reform of the United Nations, including the Security Council, and advancing regional and mini-lateral cooperation that complements the UN framework. Thailand emphasized its role as a trusted partner and responsible member of the United Nations.

In closing, he also responded to remarks made by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia regarding Thailand-Cambodia relations. He reaffirmed Thailand’s commitment to the ceasefire between the two countries and to efforts toward sustainable peace, while stressing that Thailand does not seek territorial claims over any country.
