Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow shared updates on Thailand's approach to Myanmar to the diplomatic corps, following the first meeting between ASEAN foreign ministers and Myanmar's foreign minister since the political changes in Myanmar, along with related talks with peace negotiators and ethnic groups.
Thailand is advancing its "Calibrated Re-engagement" policy to gradually support Myanmar's reintegration into ASEAN while encouraging progress on the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus. ASEAN members agreed to monitor four key areas:
• Expanding humanitarian assistance
• Reducing violence
• Sustaining peace dialogue
• Fostering national reconciliation
Thailand also proposed that ASEAN's Special Envoy be granted direct access to Aung San Suu Kyi to verify her well-being. Discussions with Myanmar's peace delegation and ethnic groups emphasized the need for continuous dialogue, with Thailand offering to facilitate future talks.
During Myanmar's foreign minister's visit, which included a courtesy call on Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, both sides agreed to strengthen cooperation on border security, trade, transnational crime, online scams, drugs, and environmental issues through a proposed technical working group. The Deputy Prime Minister reaffirmed Thailand's Dual-Track Approach and its commitment to serving as a "bridge" for dialogue, peace, and regional stability.
