Deputy Interior Minister Chaidet Thaiseth, who oversees the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), has reassured the public that Thailand's tsunami monitoring and early warning system remains fully active and highly reliable.
Addressing recent concerns that certain detection buoys in the Andaman Sea failed to transmit data, he emphasized that the warning system does not rely on buoys alone, but integrates data from multiple sectors following strict Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
Regarding the buoys in question, rough monsoon waves snapped their anchoring cables, causing them to drift. The DDPM and the Royal Thai Navy are tracking them via GPS. Plans are underway to retrieve them and install replacements in November this year when sea conditions are safe.
The public, including residents and visitors, can trust that Thailand's disaster response measures remain fully prepared, with warnings issued promptly through multiple channels, including the Cell Broadcast system.
Stay safe and follow updates only from official government agencies, and help stop the spread of unverified information.
