Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, his spouse, and a delegation are scheduled to visit Thailand on 2 September 2026. During his visit, Prime Minister Wong will attend the fifth Leaders’ Retreat and witness the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on social development between Thailand and Singapore.
The visit aims to further advance Thailand-Singapore relations from bilateral cooperation toward a comprehensive partnership covering strategic issues and supporting ASEAN priorities.
The four key areas of cooperation are as follows:
1. Sustainable Green Partnership
The two countries aim to promote cooperation in clean energy, greenhouse gas emissions reduction, carbon credit trading, and regional power connectivity through the ASEAN Power Grid. This will enable ASEAN member states to transmit and trade electricity with one another, enhancing energy security and resilience. Thailand, Lao PDR, Malaysia, and Singapore are already engaged in cross-border electricity trading through the Lao PDR-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project (LTMS-PIP), an important step toward the development of the ASEAN Power Grid.
2. Economic Connectivity and Resilience
Both countries seek to expand cooperation in the digital economy, investment, technology, infrastructure, and supply chains, particularly by promoting Singaporean investment in Thailand for future industries. Singapore serves as a regional hub for finance, investment, and technology, while Thailand offers strong potential through its market, manufacturing base, infrastructure, and geographical connectivity with neighboring countries.
3. Defense and Security Cooperation
Thailand and Singapore attach importance to strengthening shared security across the areas of defense, security, and emerging threats. Cooperation is expected to focus particularly on addressing transitional crime, online scams, and cybercrime.
4. Close Regional Cooperation
Singapore will assume the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2027, followed by Thailand in 2028. The visit provides an opportunity for both countries to ensure continuity in their cooperation and to coordinate on common priorities that can be advanced for the benefit of ASEAN, particularly in areas such as the digital economy, energy security, regional connectivity, and competitiveness.
