The Thai Cabinet has approved a proposal for the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) to construct phrase 2 of southern double-track train projects, with a combined investment of 106,798.32 million baht (approximately 3.20 million US dollars):
1. Chumphon – Surat Thani section;
2. Surat Thani – Hat Yai Junction section;
3. Hat Yai Junction – Padang Besar section.
The total budget has been increased from the amount previously proposed to the Cabinet in 2025, as the SRT found it necessary to revise the project details to better manage the issues arising from fluctuating construction costs and ensure that the project meets required standards.
The three projects are expected to strengthen the southern transport network. The Hat Yai Junction – Padang Besar section will connect Thailand’s railway network with Malaysia through the Padang Besar border crossing, promoting trade, tourism, and regional economic connectivity, as well as supporting the country’s potential as a transportation and logistics hub in the ASEAN region. The projects are scheduled for completion in 2033.
