Thailand Draws Global Pharma Giants to Invest US$3 Billion in Research

From buying medicines to building them, Thailand steps up!

The Ministry of Public Health has successfully concluded talks with two of the world's largest pharmaceutical companies, MSD and Roche, with Sandoz and a dozen more global drugmakers next in line.

This is a turning point in the country's economic strategy: moving Thailand beyond contract manufacturing and into co-developing and co-producing high-technology, high-value products.

What's on the table: Roche has signalled an initial THB15 billion (approximately US$453 million) in pharmaceutical R&D investment in Thailand, according to Government Spokesperson Dr. Ekkapob Pianpises.

With other companies still negotiating, total research funding could reach THB100 baht (approximately US$3 billion). Talks also cover building pharmaceutical manufacturing bases on Thai soil.

Lower-priced access to new medicines for hard-to-treat diseases through Thailand's universal health coverage system

When a country helps develop a drug, it doesn't just import the result, it gains the science, the jobs, and a seat at the negotiating table on price.

For Thai patients, that means earlier access to breakthrough treatments. For Thai scientists, clinical researchers, and manufacturing talent, it means a whole new career pipeline at home.

This is part of Thailand's broader push to become a Medical Investment Hub in Southeast Asia — a real, measurable deliverable that grows the economy while improving quality of life.

Thailand isn't just open for business. It's open for discovery.
