Thai Universities Develop Electric Shock Detection Canes to Protect Flood Victims

Prof. Dr. Yodchanan Wongsawat, Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation, received 500 innovative devices designed to detect electronic leakage in floodwaters. The devices include the “Hazard Alert Cane,” developed by Uttaradit Rajaphat University, and the “Life-Changing Cane,” developed by Rajamangala University of Technology Lanna.

According to 2026 statistics, electrical leakage in floodwater is the second-leading cause of death among flood victims, after drowning. The two cane models address this hidden danger through non-contact scanning technology, alerting users to potential electrical hazards with LED lights and audible alarms. Both devices have already been tested in the flood areas.

Following the handover, the devices would be distributed to residents and volunteers in high-risk areas. The initiative aims to reduce fatalities not only during the flood but also during recovery efforts after the water recedes.
