Thailand’s Upper Northeast is known for its rice fields, bold flavors, and the Mekong River on its border. On 3 November 2026, it also served as the setting for a mobile Cabinet meeting, as the government took its work out of Bangkok and into Udon Thani.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said the result is a plan to develop the region in four areas: agriculture, trade, tourism and community safety.
■ From farm to world table
The plan starts with what Isan grows best. The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, the Ministry of Industry and private businesses will work together to add value to three key crops: rice, rubber and energy crops. The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation will also study plans for a food innovation center and a food standard testing laboratory. The aim is to help farmers earn a more reliable income and make the Northeast one of the world's leading producers of high-quality food.
■ A new gateway on the Mekong
The government is also looking toward the border. Bueng Kan, a province on the Mekong River facing Laos, will be studied as a possible new Special Border Economic Zone. Officials will also look at whether Bueng Kan Airport is ready for development and what incentives could attract investors to the area.
■ Tourism that benefits local people
Each province in the Upper Northeast has its own character, and the government wants visitors to experience it. The Ministry of Tourism and Sports will lead efforts to build on each province’s identity and link travel routes. The aim is to attract visitors in every season and keep tourism income flowing into local communities.
■ Safer communities
The plan also tackles the drug problem. The Royal Thai Police and the Ministry of Interior will strengthen their databases and use modern technology to make enforcement more effective. They will also work with neighboring countries to stop drug trafficking. The government will expand Udon Thani’s own approach, the “Udon Model Plus.” Under this approach, the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security will help rehabilitate people with drug addiction, and the Ministry of Public Health will provide medical treatment and care for their physical and mental health.
Together, the four areas show what the government wants for Isan: a region that produces more value, connects with its neighbors, welcomes more visitors and keeps its communities safe.
