Flights between Thailand and China just got more efficient!

Since 3 September 2026, aircraft have been using a more direct route over northern Thailand and Laos, heading toward southwestern China. Developed by Aeronautical Radio of Thailand (AEROTHAI), the route is shorter, so flights use less fuel and produce fewer emissions.

Developed by Aeronautical Radio of Thailand Ltd. (AEROTHAI) under its Direct Routing for Sustainable Aviation (DRSA) project, the route was used by 530 flights operated by 23 airlines between 3 September and 23 October 2026. It reduced cumulative flight distances by 18,525 nautical miles (approximately 34,309 kilometers), saved 112,890 kilograms of fuel, and cut carbon dioxide emissions by 357 metric tons. AEROTHAI estimates that continued use could save airlines more than THB 40.5 million (approximately US$1.2 million) in fuel costs and reduce annual carbon dioxide emissions by 2,561 metric tons.

AEROTHAI plans to develop three more direct routes linking western and eastern flight corridors. It is also building its own dashboard to track distance, fuel and emissions savings as part of its “Green Air Traffic Management” efforts.

For travelers, the improved route could shorten flight times on some services between Thailand and China, depending on airline adoption and flight schedules. The project also supports Thailand's efforts to improve aviation efficiency and strengthen its position as a world-class aviation hub.
