Vietnam and Cambodia to Connect via Expressway

A new expressway connecting Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, to Cambodia is expected to be completed by December 2027. The project, part of China's Belt and Road Initiative, will establish the shortest route between the two cities, passing through the Bavet-Moc Bai International Border Gate.

On Cambodia's side, the Phnom Penh-Bavet Expressway, which began construction in 2023, will link directly to the new Vietnamese expressway. This connection will create a smooth and efficient corridor between Phnom Penh and Ho Chi Minh City, enhancing trade and travel between the two bustling urban centers.

The expressway will span approximately 50 kilometers and initially feature four lanes, with plans to expand to six lanes in the future. The total roadbed will be 25.5 meters wide.

This project is seen as a major boost to the international intermodal route, helping ease congestion on the existing Highway 22, which currently suffers from traffic bottlenecks and overloading.
