Two well-known waterfalls in Chiang Mai’s Mae Rim district have been temporarily shut down due to flash floods caused by heavy overnight rain. Doi Suthep-Pui National Park announced the closure of Mae Sa and Tat Mok waterfalls to ensure public safety, with the closures remaining in place until conditions improve.
The heavy rain also caused the Wang Hai weir in Chiang Dao district to collapse, leading to severe flooding in nearby villages. Local officials, along with army and border patrol units, have inspected the area to assess the damage from the breach.
Flooding has spread to several districts, including Phrao, Samoeng, Chom Thong, and the central district. Northern runoff into the Ping River has raised concerns about potential flooding in downtown Chiang Mai, prompting local authorities to monitor the situation closely.
In response, the provincial irrigation office and other government agencies have set up a monitoring center. Officials are prepared to open sluice gates along the Ping River to release water if necessary, as efforts to mitigate the flooding's impact continue.
