Thailand Proposes 3 Key Areas to Strengthen ASEAN-Japan Cooperation

Today (October 10, 2024) at 11:30 a.m., Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, along with leaders and representatives from ASEAN member states, attended the 27th ASEAN-Japan Summit with H.E. Mr. Ishiba Shigeru.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra congratulated Mr.Ishiba Shigeru on assuming his position as Prime Minister, noting that Japan is a trusted and reliable partner for ASEAN, with a longstanding relationship spanning over half a century. Japan has played a vital role in promoting peace, stability, and economic development in the region. Therefore, ASEAN and Japan will work to strengthen their relationship through the promotion of a comprehensive strategic partnership focused on the following three areas:

Accelerating the Digital Transformation
Thailand encourages Japan’s participation in emerging digital fields such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and e-commerce, which are crucial to the digital transformation. ASEAN and Japan should also enhance cooperation in skills development and upskilling for MSMEs, and facilitate access to new markets. However, rapid technological development brings both opportunities and challenges, including the risk of misuse. Therefore, ASEAN and Japan should collaborate more closely in promoting cybersecurity and combating cybercrime through the ASEAN-Japan Cybersecurity Cooperation Center, which focuses on developing cybersecurity professionals.

Promoting the Transition to Green Energy
Prime Minister Paetongtarn emphasized the Thai government’s commitment to promoting clean energy production and environmentally friendly vehicles in the region. She commended the progress of the ASEAN-Japan Co-Creation Initiative for the Next-Generation Automotive Industry and expressed hope for further collaboration in the Asia Zero Emission Community meetings to drive new energy transitions in the region.

Driving Economic Growth through Innovation
The Prime Minister views innovation as a key driver of economic and industrial transformation. Thailand appreciates Japan’s support in enhancing cooperation in science, technology, and innovation, as well as in research exchanges. She hopes for further collaboration in agricultural technology, food, and adding value to local products through innovation. It is believed that if the development follows these three strategic areas, Thailand will see accelerated growth and progress.
