The Ban Vang Checkpoint in Muen District, Vientiane Province, has been upgraded from a local checkpoint, in operation since 1993, to an international border checkpoint as of October 15. The official opening ceremony was attended by notable figures from both Laos and Thailand, including Vientiane Provincial Governor Khamphan Sitthidampha, Lao Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Phoxay Khaykhamphithoune, Loei Province Vice Governor Kittikun Bhutkun, and Thai Ambassador to Laos Morakot Sisavat.
The checkpoint connects Laos’ Vientiane Province with Thailand’s Loei Province and directly links to Thailand’s international checkpoint in Loei. This upgrade is seen as a key step toward fostering economic growth and social development between the two countries.
During the ceremony, the Vientiane Provincial Governor emphasized that the international status of the checkpoint would facilitate the movement of goods and people, stimulate local businesses, and strengthen collaboration between the two provinces. The upgrade aligns with Laos' national goals of poverty alleviation and sustainable development.
Furthermore, this development supports Laos’ 2024 tourism campaign, “Travel Laos, Travel Vientiane: Safe, Cultural, Natural, and Historic Appreciation.” Vientiane Province is poised to become a tourism hub, serving as a gateway to major attractions and UNESCO World Heritage sites in Luang Prabang and Xieng Khouang provinces, among others.
