Six Thai destinations have been acknowledged for their commitment to sustainable tourism as part of the Green Destinations Top 100 Stories initiative. This global effort highlights places making strides in environmental protection, community development, and responsible tourism. The six destinations include Wiang Phu Phiang Chae Haeng in Nan, U Thong Ancient City in Suphanburi, Songkhla City, Chiang Khan, Uthai Thani’s floating house community, and Hua Hin.
Wiang Phu Phiang Chae Haeng was celebrated for reviving the traditional Hok Peng Festival, boosting year-round tourism in Nan province. U Thong Ancient City, formerly the capital of the Dvaravati Kingdom, turned a disused mine into a Buddhist park, enhancing its tourism appeal. Songkhla City was recognized for preserving its cultural heritage through storytelling and its bid for UNESCO World Heritage status.
Chiang Khan, famous for its historic wooden houses, introduced a breakfast voucher program connecting tourists with local restaurants, driving community economic growth. Uthai Thani’s floating house community, representing a 400-year-old riverside lifestyle, was commended for cultural preservation efforts in the face of drought challenges. Hua Hin, Thailand’s oldest seaside resort, focused on achieving zero waste through community-driven waste management initiatives.
These destinations demonstrate how Thai communities are balancing cultural preservation and environmental protection while promoting tourism. They will be celebrated at the Green Destinations Global Conference 2024 in Chile, with further recognition at the ITB Berlin event in March 2025.
