Laos and Vietnam have agreed to advance plans for enhanced connectivity through both rail and road infrastructure, with a focus on the Vientiane-Vung Ang railway project. This initiative aims to link the two countries, boost regional connectivity, and strengthen trade routes and economic cooperation.
During recent talks, Laos President Thongloun Sisoulith and Vietnam Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh committed to accelerating the Thakhaek-Vung Ang seaport rail link. They also reaffirmed their support for the Vientiane-Hanoi expressway and pledged to align financial and energy policies to support these projects.
The discussions underscored the importance of Laos-Vietnam cooperation within broader regional frameworks.
The Vientiane-Vung Ang railway project, outlined in the 2021–2030 development plan with extensions through 2050, is a public-private partnership between Vietnam’s Deo Ca Group JSC and Laos’ Petroleum Trading Lao (PTL). The 554.7-kilometer rail line, estimated to cost around USD 6.3 billion, is slated for completion by early 2027. Once operational, it will connect Laos to regional maritime trade routes, providing access to markets in China, South Korea, and Japan.
