Cambodia Celebrates 71st Independence Day with Grand Ceremony

Cambodia celebrated the 71st anniversary of its independence from French colonial rule on Saturday with a grand ceremony at the Independence Monument in Phnom Penh. Presided over by King Norodom Sihamoni, the event honored Cambodia’s sovereignty regained on November 9, 1953.

Key Cambodian leaders, including Senate President Hun Sen, National Assembly President Khuon Sudary, and Prime Minister Hun Manet, attended the ceremony alongside foreign diplomats, civil servants, military personnel, and thousands of citizens. King Sihamoni laid a wreath and lit a victory torch that will burn for three days as a tribute to Cambodia's enduring independence and unity.

The celebrations featured symbolic gestures such as the release of balloons and pigeons to signify freedom, followed by evening fireworks displays across Phnom Penh. Government buildings throughout Cambodia were adorned with independence-themed banners, underscoring the nation’s pride in its historic achievement.

The occasion also marked the 71st anniversary of the founding of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF). Un Sa Mean, a resident of Phnom Penh, fondly remembered the "Sangkum Reastr Niyum" era, expressing deep respect for King Father Sihanouk’s dedication to the people. Younger citizens, like Heng Srey Mab, also expressed appreciation for the day’s significance, acknowledging Cambodia’s long struggle for freedom and the importance of unity.

On behalf of the United Kingdom, King Charles III sent congratulations to King Sihamoni, expressing optimism about continued collaboration on shared global issues between the two nations.

The festivities, observed annually under the King’s presidency, reflect Cambodia’s ongoing commitment to honoring its sovereignty and national progress, uniting generations of citizens in remembrance and celebration.
