Cambodia celebrated the 46th anniversary of Victory Day, a historic milestone marking the overthrow of the Khmer Rouge regime on January 7, 1979. The commemoration serves as a profound reminder of the nation’s resilience and its journey from genocide to peace, development, and progress.
Dr. Kin Phea, Director General of the International Relations Institute of Cambodia, emphasized the significance of this day as a turning point in Cambodian history. “It represents the moment Cambodians reclaimed their right to life, which had been stripped away under the Khmer Rouge regime. Today, they enjoy not only the right to life but also freedoms and opportunities to thrive,” he remarked. Dr. Kin also highlighted the Royal Government's vision for the future, aspiring to achieve upper middle-income status by 2030 and high-income status by 2050, while actively integrating Cambodia into regional and global frameworks.
Dr. Yong Pov, Secretary General of the Royal Academy of Cambodia, called Victory Day a vital historical milestone and urged Cambodians to reflect on its lessons. He stressed the importance of ensuring that the horrors of the Khmer Rouge era are never repeated, urging all citizens to honor the sacrifices made for Cambodia’s liberation.
At a mass meeting held at Koh Pich Theatre, Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, President of the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) and President of the Senate, paid tribute to the Royal Government's achievements over the past 46 years. “The older generation worked tirelessly to rescue the nation from genocide and to secure peace. Today, the younger generation is steadfastly maintaining and building upon this foundation,” he stated.
Samdech Techo Hun Sen also commended the 7th legislature of the Royal Government for its dedication to preserving the monarchy as a symbol of Cambodia’s political stability. He noted that the country continues to experience robust economic growth, with stable macroeconomic indicators and consistent progress under the current leadership.
Victory Day stands as a poignant reminder of Cambodia’s unity and determination in the face of adversity. It is a day to honor the sacrifices of the past while looking toward a future defined by peace, prosperity, and continued progress.
