Thailand to Implement Equal Marriage Law, Marking Historic Step for LGBTQ+ Rights

Thailand will implement its Equal Marriage Law on January 23, 2025, ensuring equal legal rights for all couples. The law introduces gender-inclusive language, digitalized overseas registrations, and streamlined processes under the Family Registration Act.

The Ministry of Interior, led by Anutin Charnvirakul, has completed preparations, including staff training and system updates. To mark the occasion, the “Gong of Triumph for All Loves Across 878 Districts” ceremony in Kathu, Phuket, will feature same-sex marriage registrations, cultural events, and legal clinics.

Couples must be at least 18, unmarried, and not biologically or adoptively related. Required documents include national ID cards or passports, and two witnesses are needed. Registrations at district offices and embassies are free, while off-site services cost 200 baht.

Spouses will have equal rights in asset management, inheritance, tax benefits, and survivor support. This landmark law positions Thailand as a regional leader in gender equality and social progress.
