The Thai government has announced urgent measures to tackle Bangkok’s worsening PM 2.5 air pollution, including seven days of free public transport from January 25 to 31, 2025. The initiative, ordered by Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and announced by Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit, aims to reduce private vehicle use and encourage residents to rely on metro and bus services.
The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) and private operators will waive fares, with the government allocating 140 million baht to compensate them. The Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) will also provide free bus services on all routes.
To further curb pollution, the Department of Land Transport (DLT) has launched emissions inspections targeting public buses and freight vehicles. Meanwhile, construction sites must implement stricter dust control measures, such as water spraying, road cleaning, and covering transported materials.
Looking ahead, the Ministry of Transport is focused on expanding Bangkok’s public transport network and enhancing connectivity. The government urges residents to adopt sustainable commuting practices, including using public transport and carpooling, to improve urban air quality.
