Phnom Penh Municipal Administration has announced the launch of the first phase of the highly anticipated ‘Walking Street’ along the riverbank, set to begin on February 1, 2025. This new pedestrian area will stretch from the Cambodian Post Office to the Royal Palace (Street 240) and will operate every Saturday and Sunday evening from 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM.
The decision was finalized during a meeting on January 29, 2025, chaired by Phnom Penh Governor Khuong Sreng, with the participation of representatives from the Ministry of Tourism and other relevant authorities at City Hall.
Governor Khuong Sreng revealed that the City Hall has been planning this project since 2019. However, its implementation was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Following directives from the Royal Government, the Phnom Penh Municipal Administration has now resumed efforts to establish the pedestrian street as a means to attract both local and international tourists to the city.
The governor emphasized that the launch date of February 1, 2025, is set in stone. In its initial phase, the Walking Street will be open exclusively on Saturday and Sunday evenings, creating a lively environment for visitors and boosting tourism in Phnom Penh.
As part of the project, the designated area will be closed to all vehicle traffic. Authorities will also set up public toilets and ensure proper organization to enhance the visitor experience.
Prior to the official launch, authorities will carry out an extensive awareness campaign to inform residents about the project and the traffic restrictions during operating hours.
