Malaysia Establishes Single Border Control Agency

Malaysia has launched the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) to oversee all international borders. Previously, more than 20 different agencies handled border security before their responsibilities were consolidated.

Currently managing 22 border checkpoints, AKPS will take full control of all 114 entry points by 2026. Established under the Border Control and Protection Agency Act 2024, AKPS aims to enhance coordination, improve security, and streamline trade and travel.

Deputy Prime Minister II Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof stated that the agency will unify border enforcement. Led by Datuk Seri Hazani Ghazali, a former senior police officer, AKPS has over 6,000 personnel and plans to expand to 16,000 by 2026.

AKPS is responsible for inspecting people, goods, vehicles, and agricultural products crossing the border. It also investigates border-related offences and enhances security through intelligence gathering.

The agency integrates personnel from customs, police, immigration, and other enforcement bodies without adding new positions. While existing agencies retain core duties, AKPS oversees border checkpoints, while the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) continues securing maritime borders.

Travellers will see minimal changes, aside from officers wearing AKPS armbands. Future upgrades include automated passport control and e-gates to speed up clearance and enhance efficiency.
