Thailand Extends Work Permit Renewals for Southeast Asian Workers

The Thai Cabinet has approved an extension for work permit renewals for migrant workers from Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar.

Labor Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn announced on February 5 that work permits for Lao and Vietnamese workers will be extended for three months until May 13, 2025. Meanwhile, Cambodian and Myanmar workers will receive a six-month extension, allowing them to stay in Thailand until August 13, 2025.

This extension gives employers additional time to submit the necessary documents to further extend the stay and employment of Lao and Vietnamese workers until February 13, 2026, and Cambodian and Myanmar workers until February 13, 2027. Employers may also apply for an additional two-year extension thereafter.

Currently, approximately 2.4 million migrant workers are authorized to work under the Cabinet’s resolution, effective until February 13, 2025. Of these, around 1.2 million have already had their names submitted by employers for renewal.

Somchai Morakotsriwan, Director-General of the Department of Employment, urged employers, businesses, and migrant workers to submit their foreign worker lists by February 13. He emphasized the importance of completing all required procedures on time to avoid delays or complications in work permit applications.
