Thailand, Myanmar, and China have reiterated their commitment to combating telecommunications fraud and online scams by enhancing law enforcement collaboration and intelligence sharing. Senior security officials and foreign ministers from the three nations convened in Bangkok on February 28 to discuss strategies for countering cross-border criminal networks. Chaired by Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa, the meeting focused on strengthening cooperation to enhance security and safeguard citizens in the region.
The discussions resulted in a plan to intensify efforts against scam networks that have taken advantage of enforcement loopholes across multiple jurisdictions. The three countries agreed to improve intelligence-sharing mechanisms and work more closely with neighboring nations to address transnational crime. Thai officials emphasized that collaboration would continue under an expanded coordination framework to systematically dismantle fraud operations.
The talks also covered the repatriation of Chinese nationals from Myanmar via Thailand. The three nations agreed that these returns should be pre-arranged and conducted in an orderly manner to minimize disruptions at border areas. Thailand reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the process while ensuring that all actions align with national laws and international humanitarian principles. An agreement in principle was reached to resume repatriations once all necessary preparations are completed.
Over the past year, Thailand has been collaborating with China, Myanmar, and other regional partners to strengthen efforts against cross-border crime. These initiatives have included discussions at key meetings, such as the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and consultations with officials from China, Laos, Myanmar, Bangladesh, and India. The recent trilateral talks reaffirm the commitment to establishing a structured security cooperation framework based on mutual interests and longstanding diplomatic relations.
