The Thai Cabinet has approved the proposal to nominate the central pagoda of Wat Arun Ratchawararam for inclusion on UNESCO’s World Heritage Tentative List. The submission, titled “The Central Pagoda of Wat Arun Ratchawararam: Icon of Rattanakosin,” is expected to be sent to the UNESCO World Heritage Centre in Paris by the end of April 2025.
The nomination highlights the central pagoda as a distinctive example of Thai Buddhist architecture that embodies both national identity and cultural exchange across Asia. Evolving from earlier pagoda forms of the Ayutthaya period, the structure was reimagined during the Rattanakosin era into a uniquely Thai style—characterized by its intricate detail, harmonious proportions, and exceptional craftsmanship.
Thailand is nominating the site under UNESCO’s cultural heritage criteria (i) and (ii), which recognize outstanding artistic achievement and the significance of intercultural dialogue. If accepted, the proposal will be reviewed at the next World Heritage Committee General Assembly, anticipated between June and July 2025.
To support the nomination, the Ministry of Culture has tasked the Fine Arts Department with providing technical assistance to ensure Wat Arun meets the necessary standards for future full inscription. This will include detailed conservation planning and collaboration with temple authorities and local stakeholders.
Additionally, efforts are underway to engage the public and gather data to strengthen the nomination. The final Nomination Dossier will incorporate contributions from researchers, heritage specialists, and members of the local community.
