Singapore has been ranked the most peaceful country in Asia for 2025, reaffirming its reputation as one of the safest nations worldwide, according to the Global Peace Index 2025 by the Australia-based Institute for Economics and Peace.
The city-state placed 6th globally, behind Iceland, Ireland, New Zealand, Austria, and Switzerland, and just ahead of Portugal, Denmark, Slovenia, and Finland. Other top-performing Asian countries were Japan (12th) and Malaysia (13th).
Singapore has shown steady progress since the index was first launched in 2008, when it ranked 22nd. It entered the global top 10 in 2019 and has remained there ever since. The report highlights Singapore’s strong scores in societal safety and security, alongside low levels of both domestic and international conflict.
However, the country’s relatively high level of militarization—largely to safeguard its vital sea trade routes—has prevented it from reaching the very top of the index.
The world’s most peaceful country remains Iceland, which has held the number one spot for 18 consecutive years. With no standing army, navy, or air force, a small population, and some of the lowest crime rates globally, Iceland is considered a benchmark for peace and security.
